What is Seon (a.k.a. zen)?
- Beyond Meditation to Cultural Expression -
Seon originated in India around 1300 B.C. as “Dhyana”, which had a widespread influence throughout Asia. It was translated as “禪(Chan)” in China, “선(Seon)” in Korea, and “禪(Zen)” in Japan.
The term signifies meditative contemplation or thought cultivation, emphasizing the act of polishing the mind, not through analysis but by gathering, concentrating, and going deep within.
Seon is closely related to Buddhism, and can be regarded as a branch of Buddhism, where it emphasizes experiential realization and awakening through rigorous meditation, transcending conventional thinking.
